Awards to Illinois poets in eligible locations to recognize outstanding achievements and contributions to the community. Awards will be conferred on one professional adult poet and one aspiring youth poet. Each awardee will receive a monetary prize. Youth poets must live in Urbana; professional poets must live in Champaign County.

The City of Urbana’s Poet Laureate Program celebrates poetry by recognizing a resident poet who makes meaningful connections, honors and serves the diverse community, and elevates the importance of the creative writing art form through sharing their work with Urbana residents. The Poet Laureate acts as an advocate for poetry, language, and the arts. They create a unique artistic legacy through public readings and civic events. The role of the Poet Laureate is to build upon the City’s local poetry scene, foster appreciation of poetry in all its forms, and support Urbana residents and visitors in deepening their appreciation of the art of creative writing.

The City of Urbana’s Youth Poet Laureate Program celebrates poetry by recognizing an Urbana youth poet who honors and serves the diverse community, and elevates the importance of the creative writing art form through sharing their work with Urbana residents. The Youth Poet Laureate acts as an advocate for poetry, language, and the arts. They create a unique artistic legacy through outreach activities, special programs, and presentations of individual works. conducting outreach activities, special programs, and presentations of individual works. Estimated Size of Grant:

- The Poet Laureate receives a $2,000 award and spearheads a project or event, as well as hosts an annual poetry showcase, in collaboration with the Urbana Arts and Culture Program.
- The Youth Poet Laureate receives a $1,000 award and works with the Urbana Arts and Culture Program to host poetry projects or events, as well as participates in the Urbana’s Poet Laureate annual poetry showcase, in collaboration with the Urbana Arts and Culture Program.

Term of Contract:

The Poet Laureate and Youth Poet Laureate serve a one-year term.

Additional Eligibility Criteria:

Poet Laureate Eligibility:
- Be at least 21 years of age
- Have resided in Champaign County for a minimum of one year prior to applying
- Display a strong commitment to the community
- Be active as a professional poet (i.e. a poet whose work has been published, performed, and/or presented through a process of editorial or curatorial review)
- Be able and enthusiastic to fulfill duties

Youth Poet Laureate Eligibility:
- Be between the ages of 13 and 18 years of age at the time of application
- Have resided in the City of Urbana for a minimum of one year prior to applying
- Display a strong commitment to the community
- Be active as an aspiring poet! Applicant’s resume and work samples could include any of the following: Works performed and/or presented in a classroom setting for a grade; Experience performing and/or presenting poetry in a public setting; Participation in a poetry group or organization; Be able and enthusiastic to fulfill duties

How to Apply:
- You may nominate someone for Urbana's Poet Laureate. An email will be sent to them notifying them of the nomination. Nominations will be kept anonymous and must be submitted no later than 5:00pm, Thursday, October 8th. Late nominations will not be accepted.
- You may apply directly for Urbana's Poet Laureate. You do not need to be nominated to apply. Applications for Poet Laureate are due Sunday, October 18th at 5pm. Late applications will not be accepted.
